SHONA’S TRI-TRAINING BLOG – 20TH MAY

1 day to go…

13262102_10209882639886364_2021428379_oIt’s tomorrow… Ironman is tomorrow!!! Oh god!! My first ever Ironman! I can’t believe it’s actually finally here! After all these months training – the early morning sessions, the after work sessions, the long weekends of bike rides, all the time in the pool, the saddle soreness, the running! It’s crazy! I can’t describe how I feel! It goes from slightly scared and nervous to super excited in a matter of seconds!! It’s a real rollercoaster of emotions. I can’t even begin to imagine what it must feel like to cross the finish line. But I have a journey to go on before that… 140.6 miles of a journey to be precise… .and that is a bloody long way!

This morning involved me sorting out my transition bags… that involved me putting lots of stuff in them and then stressing that I haven’t got what I need in them! I give up and decide I’ll worry about that later! Time to get out on Channing and make sure he is race ready! I ride up through town and back to check the breaks and gears and he is all good to go! A quick shower and I start day 2 of carb loading. I don’t even want breakfast as I am so full from last night still (my tummy was sticking out and everything by the time I had forced the huge portion of dinner down that Mark gave me!) but that isn’t an option so I get my porridge in me. I get my bikini on and head down to the pool with my book to have some peace and quiet. I spend a blissful few hours on my own, drinking copious amounts of fruit juice and trying to nibble on rice cakes. My phone going slightly crazy with messages of good luck and the like – thank you to all you lovely folk who have sent me a message and wished me well! It is much appreciated and I want to do all of you proud!

I head back up the stairs to the apartment to join Lisa and Mark for lunch and shovel a Spanish omelette down me – how all these carbs will make me race well tomorrow, I have no clue! I feel fat and full right now! I might just sink on the swim! Then back to the pool it is for more relaxing… the support crew join me mid-afternoon to chill out. All too soon it is time for me to head up to the apartment and get Channing and my transition bags to go and check them in ready for tomorrow! A quick call with OPI to check I have everything I require… she calms me and we talk through everything in my bags… she then gives me about a million more instructions about the race and I am good to go!

Ian comes along and we head out down the stairs so I can join the queue for check-in. I am lined up behind number 6 – he is clearly a pro and his bike is immense!! I head through and they check my helmet, race number, bike and bags and I go and rack my bike and find the hooks for my bike and run bags. I remember to let some air out of my tyres – don’t want to be risking one popping overnight! We then leave the hustle and bustle and go back to the apartment. But then I realise I need to be eating AGAIN, so back down we go to pick up a takeaway pizza for dinner! Hawaiian pizza here involves ham, pineapple and banana – and it’s delicious! I struggle through it and I manage to get it all in me. I think I will be glad to not really be eating tomorrow… a day of energy gels awaits!! We then sit down to discuss a race plan of action for the support crew! I am slightly concerned at the mischief that finds them when I leave them unsupervised… I better shift my ass around the course to get back as quick as I can! Otherwise they will likely end up arrested or something! A rough plan of action established… what could go wrong??! I guess I will find out tomorrow when I am on the course!

A quick shower and then I put on my timing chip and get my kit laid out ready for the morning… I am currently feeling slightly nervous but on the whole I am relatively calm. Fingers crossed I can get some sleep… See you on the other side, where the next instalment will hopefully be written by an Ironman!
